Rolfing Structural Integration
Hello, I’m James. I’ve recently joined The Body Mind Clinic in Cardiff. Rolfing is originally from the 1950’s, where biochemist Dr Ida P Rolf developed deep tissue manipulation techniques to improve posture whilst enhancing physical and emotional well-being. Optimal muscle and joint function depend on the stretching and sliding capacity of connective tissue layers called myofascia. Accidents, operations, over-use, poor posture and stress can result in restricted range of movement as the myofascia hardens. Softening by deep tissue manipulation restores healthy function of the myofascia.
Rolfing is for people of all ages and backgrounds who:
* feel chronic tension or pain through exposure to emotional or physical stress
* wish to improve their posture, balance, strength, agility and flexibility
Common conditions that respond well to myofascial release treatment include:
Back ache, Frozen Shoulder, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Golfer’s or Tennis Elbow, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Sciatica, Whiplash, Tension Headaches, Sports Injuries

Treatment
Each Rolfing session takes about one and a half hours. Sessions are usually spaced 1 to 4 weeks apart. The Rolfer will analyse your posture in standing, walking and sitting. During the session you lie relaxed on a massage table. The Rolfer then uses the hands, forearm or elbow to apply sensitive and precise pressure to specific areas of your body. The process is supported by guided movements. The technique progresses over series of up to ten sessions, each having different specific structural and functional aims. For further information please see James’ rolfing website.
